Suits and sneakers is a bad idea
Even these homeless guys know what's suit-appropriate.
Guys, please listen up. The following is some of the most important sartorial information you'll receive for a while.
Today, in broad daylight in Center City,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there were men of various ages wearing suits with athletic sneakers. Forget, for a moment, that the suits were ill-fitting (and indeed they were). Wearing a suit with sneakers is like making a delicious homemade lasagna from scratch and then melting some Kraft singles on it in the microwave. Melted American cheese has its place (this is Philly, after all), just not on homemade lasagna. Sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], likewise, have their place, just not with suits. Like adding colors to a tuxedo, it's a sartorial oxymoron that should be avoided,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no matter how comfortable your Asics are.
Now, some will respond by saying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "But two issues ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], GQ totally advocated wearing sneakers with suits on page 140!" Indeed they did, and while GQ is generally an excellent source of information for all things fashionable and advised their readers to keep their sneakers "clean and crisp,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," it's important to remember that GQ is just as interested with fleeting trends as they are with permanent style,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and pairing sneakers with suits is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at best, a fleeting trend. At worst,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it makes you look silly. Appropriate dress shoes can be found all over the place at numerous price points. Cole Haan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Boyd's, , Benjamin Lovell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Payless Shoe Source at the Gallery, so you can at least look the part.
Assuming you have no dress code to adhere to,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], either dressing up or dressing down is fine. It's up to you, however, to pick which side of the fence you'll be on for that day. If you're dressing down, feel free to throw on some cool kicks (not crappy athletic sneakers; see Bethany Rein's article for more on athletic wear), but do it with jeans or khakis. If you're donning a suit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that calls for some kind of dress shoe so as to not dilute the integrity of what you're wearing. And no,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the fact that you're headed to the gym after work is not an excuse to wear Chucks with Hugo Boss. That's what locker rooms are for.
I must disagree. I've been wearing sneakers with suits for decades (I'm 50+) and feel I've been successful at it. They key is to wear sneakers that look like dress shoes. When picking out a pair, I look for shoes that meet certain criteria,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which are:
