Burning rubber with Bridgestone
Myself along with a number of journalists from across Canada and also the US were treated to a day's racing school about fourteen days ago at the fabled Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont. Being unsure of quite what to expect, I had been surprised to determine that, yes, we'd actually be driving racecars. No more lawnmower engines for this guy.
The morning began with introductions and an emphasis on safety - not only our very own, but the safety of these $72,000 Van Diemens. We moved through the day researching safe stopping and following distances,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shifting (only an down and up shift, that was neat), our close friend centrifugal force, and, obviously,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how to proceed if you feel yourself losing control (especially around the concrete wall on corner 12). "And did we mention the cars count $72,000? Yes? Okay. Moving on."
After about 2 hours of in-class instruction, i was suited up with racing gloves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], socks, shoes, balaclava, helmet and full-body suit. Suddenly things were getting very real and my cold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], clammy hands could not be blamed on an over-active A/C unit.
We received further instruction on the track throughout a walk-around the car ($72,000), and then we were ready to ride. I had been mercifully slotted into Group B, meaning I'd at least see some fellow amateurs in action first before seeing images of security escorting me off the premises flash before my eyes.
The first group made a successful run (with only one driver who couldn't drive a stick having difficulty) and then it had been our turn. I was grouped - of course - using the guys who brought their own racing suits and helmets, recanting stories of the best times on other tracks. Transpire? Avoid case.
After only one stall (touchy clutch) we broke for lunch before getting prepared to get back out there again. My second run? Exhilarating. I read articles recently about a celebrity who loves to cars in the free time since it is the only place where he is able to stop thinking about the hubbub of Hollywood. I understand exactly what he means. When you are driving, your mind's thinking about that next corner and absolutely nothing else.
The cars pack 170 hp, which doesn't seem like much, but when you think about the car only weighs 1,000 lbs, you're talking more like 500 hp plus. Then when you hit the straightaway before the last turn and floor it, your lips are folded neatly behind your ears. What a rush!
After two more rounds of laps (we did maybe 100 laps total at the time), we packed it set for your day (the rain started on cue about 5 minutes later). I'd tried it. No crashing, no spinning out, no security,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no lawsuit.
While you looked round the racetrack at the end of the day, there was a grin on every face. Drivers were trading war stories: "Did the thing is me take that last turn? Are you car number two? How fast do you think we were going? Have you been sore too?"
Bottom line: it had been an awesome day. The Bridgestone Racing Academy is available to the public and regarded as one of the elite racing schools in North America, even compared to a few of the monster operations down south. Many, thank you to Bridgestone and also the staff for allowing me to put their 24-year injury-free record at risk. Not to mention their car. How much was that worth again?.
Oh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and if the staff in the Magical Midway in Orlando are looking over this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is it possible that you should remove my name in the blacklist? Thanks.
I additionally raced last Friday,, awesome is i can say,,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], got to race Before James Hinchcliffe, IRL Pro Series Race Driver ,,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no passing allowed, James was permitted to stay on my rearend ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not the 6 car lengths once we are asked to,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Black Flagged TWICE, I had no more chances, this because of trying to lose James from MY rear view mirrors. NOT.
mY daughter won the very best improved driver during the day, Brandi Latimer, former Miss Molson Indy and Face of Champ Car ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brandis boy friend James, his brother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], father,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cousins ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bus associates and myself, 12 of us on the right track most of the day.
