More on Duke's defensive turnaround

Earlier this week, I wrote a story about Duke's transformation on defense. The unit that ranked either second-to-last or last in every meaningful ACC category last season currently ranks fourth in total defense,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], third in sacks and second in caused turnovers. Not a bad about-face in less than a year's time.
Speaking of faces,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], here is a close-up look at the new helmet stickers. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles introduced them to the players the Sunday after Duke's first game along with their accompanying slogan: the decision is mine.
"You make a decision that you going to make a play," Knowles said. "If a defensive lineman says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], third-and-6 and we really need a stop, you know what, I going to beat this guy on this play. He gets off the ball really fast and he beats the guy and he hits the quarterback,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even if he doesn sack him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he hits him and he makes the ball fly off and it an incomplete pass, that a sticker. It getting them to believe in themselves."
While Knowles was speaking hypothetically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the reality is that the play of the defensive line has been the greatest difference between this year and last. Head coach David Cutcliffe joked on Tuesday that he asked Jordan DeWalt-Ondijo who was wearing his jersey last year because the improvements he has made have been that drastic. The same can really be said about the entire line. After generating virtually no pressure on opposing quarterbacks last year, Duke has recorded 15 sacks this year.
"That has effects for the whole defense when you have a front four that are dominating the line of scrimmage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Ross Cockrell said.
The next target for the defense is a Logan Thomas-led Virginia Tech squad. It will surely be the toughest challenge yet.
"They undefeated at home," Cutcliffe said. "When you look at Virginia Tech on tape, it the Virginia Tech that we all know. Some hard knocks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some difficult circumstances here and there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but there is talent. It is a great program."
Coach Sylvia Hatchell and her North Carolina team will try to make major women basketball history Sunday.
Duke dominates Florida State for 79-60 road win
Road wins have been particularly hard to come by this year in the ACC, but the Blue Devils looked plenty comfortable at Florida State. Duke made shots at its best rate all year in a 79-60 basketball victory over the Seminoles. The 19-point win is the biggest road victory in the ACC this year.
Duke basketball: No Kelly means more Plumlee, more Curry
Duke seniors Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry scored 53 of the Blue Devils 75 points against Wake Forest. It no accident. our two best players,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], point guard Quinn Cook said.
Duke football records, 1888-2012
Look up NC State win-loss records for football teams going back to 1892,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
ACC Legend honors go to UNC's O'Koren,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Duke's Langdon, NC State's Whittenburg
Mike O had spent years as an NBA broadcaster and coach but memories of his college years flooded back when Roy Williams, the North Carolina coach, called him recently.
Wake Forest's game plan was to take away Duke's looks from 3-point range. And that worked, for the most part, but Mason Plumlee set a new career-high in points as Duke pulled out a late 75-70 win.
Less Kelly means more set plays for Duke offense
Ryan Kelly's absence has changed not only how many points Duke scores, but also how the Blue Devils score. "Now we have to have more attention to detail on setting your man up, setting screens,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], working together to get shots," said coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Duke, UNC ranked high in lacrosse
The Duke men's lacrosse team will begin the 2013 season ranked No. 4 and No. 6 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media and USILA coaches polls, respectively. The Blue Devils finished last season ranked fourth. North Carolina's men's lacrosse team, which begins its season on Feb. 8 against Air Force,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], debuted at fourth and seventh, respectively,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the USILA coaches and Inside Lacrosse media polls.
