Knickerbockers dominate Heat in an highly emotional opener,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
After the cancellation of last night's Knicks vs. Nets season opener because of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, many felt that tonight's Garden opener against the Miami Heat should also be postponed.
Even Dwayne Wade was among those who agreed stating that "There are bigger things to worry about right now."
Despite the horrible destruction caused by Sandy to the Big Apple, the Knicks were able to give their fans and the city of New York something to smile home about. Carmelo Anthony scored 30 points and 10 rebounds as the Knickerbockers rolled over the Heat in a wire to wire 104-84 victory on Friday night.
In what was the first sporting event in New York since Hurricane Sandy, Madison Square Garden was as lively and packed as ever to watch their new look team totally suffocate the defending NBA champions. Most of the players were not sure what kind of crowd they were going to get tonight, but it sure wasn't a quiet one.
"Before the game, it was difficult because we were in the locker room and I think everyone had the hurricane on their mind,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Tyson Chandler said. " And then as we are going out to the floor, we were like 'look, we're here, our friends are here, the thing we can do is put a smile on their faces and represent the city well."
Before the game, Anthony spoke to the Garden fans and thanked them for coming out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], telling them that this was the "most important time for the city of New York to come together as one and build the city back up." There was then a moment of silence for the victims of the disaster.
" Talking to the fans was something we wanted to do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], " said Anthony. " They rarely hear from us about how we feel in situations. It was only right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], me being one of the leaders of the team to step up to the forefront and give them some words."
From that point on, it didn't seem like the Heat never had a chance to pull out the victory against a highly emotional crowd and Knicks team. Steve Novak, who could barely get any 3 point shots off during the playoffs against Miami, did not have suck problem tonight scoring 17 points on 5-8 shooting from downtown.
" In my mind, when we stepped onto the court,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we knew we could not lose, " said Novak. " Losing was not an option."
If the Knicks are going to shoot 19-36 from downtown every game, then losing will never be an option. The team shot only 43 percent from the field but an amazing 53 percent from beyond the arc. This is against a Miami Heat team that is considered to be the best defensive team in the league. However, it was the Knickerbockers who looked to be the better defensive group for one game at least.
"Our defense was most important, " said Coach Woodson. "I thought we were solid from the beginning all the way through."
New York held Miami to 46 percent from the field, but held them to only 18 assists while forcing the Heat to 21 turnovers. With a team that has Dwayne Wade and Lebron James running the point at times, that is very impressive to say the least."
"I thought last week and a half of practice was pretty good,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Woodson. " We could scrimmage and actually put things in and guys worked really hard on it and took it more serious. If there was a breakdown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], someone was there to help the guy. Our defense was solid and that is how it's going to be."
Raymond Felton, who was brought to replace the popular Jeremy Lin, played a solid game in his return to the point for the Knicks as he scored 14 points,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dished out nine assists, four boards,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and three steals.
Jason Kidd, the other point guard New York brought over, played an unsung game scoring 12 points and dishing out three assists. The rest of the Knicks players could not stop praising how great Kidd is to this team.
"He brings so much. He is such an intelligent basketball player,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], " said Chandler. " He's a coach on the floor-getting guys in the right place."
"People don't really see how valuable he really is," said Novak. "He is more valuable than people give him credit for."
After a Chris Bosh layup that tied the score at 4 early in the game, Miami would never ever come close again. Anthony hit consecutive 3 pointers in a 10-0 run that gave New York a quick 11-point lead, and he followed six consecutive points by JR Smith by pulling up for a long 3-pointer and a 30-12 lead with 1:14 left in the first quarter. Anthony capped off the quarter with a fadeaway three pointer at the buzzer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], capping his 16-point period and giving the Knicks a 33-17 advantage.
Miami would cut it down to a 11 point deficit at halftime. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Knicks defense and ball movement was simply too much for the boys from South Beach to handle.
With New York City and the surrounding areas still ravaged by Sandy, the Knickerbockers gave the city a much needed lift and a belief that they could win their first championship in 40 years.
"It was great, our fans were fantastic," said Woodson. "They're like our sixth man and it's beautiful to watch. Our team comes out and plays a great team like Miami and our fans were right in it from the beginning to right to the end. It's great. it says a lot about our city New York and the fans that support us."
Even though many had mixed feelings before hand whether the game should go on, it seemed like the right decision that the game was played seeing how packed and lively the Garden was.
"It was kind of up and down, " said Anthony. "Over the last couple of days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we didn't know if the game was going to be played. The before game we looked up; and saw they cancelled the marathon. We had to go out there and play. Today was something to give New Yorkers a couple of hours of peace,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to come to the game and support us. We gave them a good show tonight, that's the least we could do."
