Author shares his goal of building schools overseas Naples Daily News
It wasn't for comfort or a way to connect with the nearly 200 Naples High School students who sat in front of him. He wanted to show his respect for them, for their institution, and slipping off his shoes was the best way he knew how.
That's how they do it in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Mortenson said. They take off their shoes to show that a "school is a place of great respect."
Mortenson knows a thing or two about schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. One School at a Time," spent the past 10 years traveling throughout the Middle East to help build schools in small villages. As of 2007, Mortenson's organization has built more than 61 schools in the two countries, providing education opportunities to more than 25,000 children - of which about 14,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 are girls.
Mortenson's stop in Naples was his only at a local high school. Earlier this week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he spoke with Edison College students and hosted a tea at a North Naples church, giving Collier County residents a chance to chat with him.
"This is really a special treat for our school," said Katy Weidenmiller, a Naples High School English teacher.
Weidenmiller helped set up Wednesday's event, which gave students a chance to interact with Mortenson, and said she hoped students would walk away from the experience eager to help.

It didn't take long before other students were pitching in to help. Seconds after Jordan Pomeroy, 18, heard Collins' plan, she volunteered to do whatever she could.
"We complain about it being cold in our classrooms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they take off their shoes for (class outside)," Pomeroy said.
It was students who helped build Mortenson's first school.
After a failed attempt to climb Pakistan's K2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the world's second highest mountain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mortenson stumbled into a village. There he found children writing with sticks on the ground. Those children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mortenson said Wednesday, asked him to build them a school.
"As we sit here, there's 140 million children who can't go to school," he said. "I'm not trying to impose Western values on them. I asked them, 'What do you want most in life?' and they said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'We want our children to go to school and don't want our babies to die.' That's what the men and women want."
It cost $12,000 to build the first school, but Mortenson said he didn't have that kind of money. He wrote letters to celebrities, in hopes of getting donations, and when that failed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he looked elsewhere.
It was a fourth-grade child at a Wisconsin elementary school who helped bring in the majority of the money for the first school. After Mortenson spoke to his class, the boy told Mortenson he had a piggy bank and was going to use it to help raise money. Several weeks later, the boy and his classmates had raised more than $6,000 in pennies.
Those pennies went toward building a school, giving girls a chance to learn in a safe place.
"If you don't educate a girl, nothing will change,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "In the last year, Taliban shut down 450 girls' schools. The greatest fear (for the Taliban) is not a bullet, it's a pen."
Everyone in the US needs to read "Three Cups of Tea", and let the name of a true hero - Greg Mortenson be known. Greg should be as famous as Paris Hilton, Anna Nichol, and our athletes and movie celebrities who have become American Idols by way of People magazine and other media hype. Greg is such an inspiration in a time when our youth need role models with strong moral character and heros who are making a difference in this world.
