When there were five, plus an occasional grandparent, the shoes were much better behaved and stayed outside the door; although they were never neatly line up and there were always more than the regulation one pair per person. Even now, I only need the faintest whiff of sea or newly-mown grass for any foot-covering to spontaneously ease itself right off my feet. All our family members dislike shoes and don theirs only reluctantly and at the last possible moment - usually in the car en route to somewhere important.
When away from home, my children have been asked "Didn't your mother teach you to wear shoes?" Not this Mother!!
