Olympics schedule
The United States' Gina Miles (who lives in Creston,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ca.) won an Olympic silver medal at the Beijing Games equestrian center in Hong Kong on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], riding McKinlaigh through two clean rounds in the eventing individual jumping finals.
"I always knew he was the best event horse in the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Miles said of McKinlaigh. Equestrian Federation after the competition. "This is the reward for a lifetime of hard work."
The gold in eventing individual jumping went to Hinrich Romeike, an amateur rider from Germany who praised his horse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Marius: "This horse means everything to my career. I would be nothing without this horse. I am a dental surgeon and dentist. I ride after work."
Britain's Tina Cook, riding Miners Frolic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], took third.
The equestrian competition continues Wednesday in Hong Kong with the first round of dressage. The Beijing Games website has the upcoming schedule and all the results. Equestrian Federation website has more on the day's events.
For those scoring at home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Cubs last won the World Series in 1908, while Team USA has won only one gold medal in the Olympics, in 1904. PDT Aug. 13) at the Yingdong Natatorium. This is a revenge match,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as the last time the nations squared off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Team USA sank to Serbia by an embarrassing 7-3 in the gold medal match of the 2008 FINA World League Super Final.
NBC's first four nights of broadcasts from the Beijing Games have averaged 30.4 million viewers during prime time, according to Nielsen Media Research. The Olympics mattered to me as a Cold War soap opera in the 1970s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when the Americans were gritty underdogs against the steroid raging communists.
The Games peaked as national drama when we shocked the Soviets in ice hockey in 1980,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when Al Michaels asked, "Do you believe in miracles?" Since then I've come to see the event as a for-profit parade of pampered,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chemically enhanced professional athletes choreographed by AT Coca-Cola,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Exxon. General Electric owns the whole thing and turns it into a prime-time reality TV show, figuring out what you want to watch and then making you wait until midnight to see it. Generally, I pass.
But then, this weekend, I saw the whole thing through the eyes of a child. My 4-year-old son loves the Olympics. I mean, he is glued to every event that comes on NBC. He is learning the rules of basketball and soccer. He loves the endless variety of sports. He knows that one of the divers is only 14 years old.
He's amazed at the skills of the female gymnasts. ("Daddy, girls are tumbling!") He knows the girls wearing the red uniform with the big white star are the Americans ("Daddy, that's our team!") He is watching every dive in the synchronized diving competition. ("Daddy, Germans are diving again!") He recognizes Michael Phelps and knows he is the fastest swimmer. He knows Bob Costas is in a place called China.
He is peppering me with questions and observations. "Daddy, green passed it to yellow! You know what's silly, Daddy? Green team passed it to Yellow!"
And,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the NBA reported that Kobe Bryant's jersey remains the most popular NBA apparel in China. NBA Champion Boston Celtics players Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, moved into the top five, and the homegrown Yao Ming fell from sixth to tenth.
The NBA hasn't released a dollar figure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it claims that year-to-year revenue from branded merchandise has risen by 60%.
Fans who opt to buy legitimate merchandise can do so at 30,000 retail locations throughout China. In July, the NBA opened its first two NBA Stores located outside the United States -- yes, both are in Beijing. NBA and Adidas also have 29 basketball shops in China.
