Andrew,Enjoyable article, always good to hear others' thoughts on how Under Armour stacks up to the competition. I think you touched on the most important aspect of the company and that is the strength of the brand. UA has built it's core brand so well that it can now use the money it makes from it's popular apparel lines to branch out in other directions (which is not without risk, obviously). I think UA's growth will come from two main areas going forward: a heavy focus on women's apparel and footwear (both of which are well underway). Nike is a quality brand and a much safer play but offers much less long-term growth. I view Columbia as a buyout candidate from something like a VFC. Long and strong UA. Nice article!
Mar 2 04:27 PMyes I agree, it is not RIGHT this instant that they have to expand the product line into other segments but the time will come soon enough and one needs to be confident in management's ability to expand in the right way, otherwise this is a terrible investment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like anything else. There is only so long Lulu can keep growing at the rates that they currently are without expanding the product line significantly. I am thinking years out and am speaking from what I've seen with my UA investment over the years. Lulu is a fantastic stock, one of the best growth stories that I've ever seen but every story hits a snag or two and it is when this happens that management needs to step it up. We'll see how they do with it when the time comes, for now enjoy the profits and good luck ; )
Feb 2 11:11 AMLulu reminds me of an early Under Armour, a company selling an extremely popular,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], niche product to start with and the margins to match. Every growth company has it's growing pains and I think Lulu will deal with some rather soon. You make an excellent point, how many yoga pants can they really keep selling to continue the kind of growth most are expecting from them? I am long UA and have watched Lulu's PPS go wild the last few years, deservingly so, but I've always thought that sooner or later they will have to branch out. UA has been having some problems doing so, which is to be expected,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and wall street is never too kind to high P/E stocks that stumble along the way. The difference I think will come down to management: I believe UA's management is doing the right things to expand into different areas and it will be interesting to see if Lulu's management can do the same. If they can, both are great investments, in my opinion. Good article.
Feb 2 09:34 AMI don't expect UA to derail Nike in this regard. Nike is and probably always will be the king of sneakers. Nike did for sneakers what UA has done for athletic apparel: revolutionized the game, so much so that the only alternative is to copy what was done. Nike has done this with their own athletic apparel and moisture-wicking shirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they followed UA's lead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], developed synthetic apparel and have had success with it in their own right. Again, this took Nike some TIME but it was done. There can be only one first product, one trailblazing company,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that doesn't mean that other products/companies that follow can't be just as good or better.
Jan 3 10:07 AMDouglas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I agree with you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Lunars are the most comfortable sneakers I've ever worn as well. Great to run in. However, it is still just a sneaker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we're not talking about inventing the next super-tablet or miracle drug here! Although granted it takes time to develop (I'm sure more than Under Armour or I as an investor would like) but many companies have made great sneakers. It's not ONLY Nike that makes a great sneaker (Puma,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Adidas, New Balance, Aasics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Reebok) UA already makes great cleats and so it really is only a matter of time before they get it right. And my main point is that time is on their side. The brand is growing rapidly in the meantime. When they finally do release a sneaker line worthy of praise WATCH OUT!
Jan 3 09:53 AMI own a pair of UA sneaks and they can not compare to a Nike equivalent, sadly. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my thinking is and always has been, that at the end of the day we are talking about a sneaker, something that is easy enough to make (it's not rocket science)! It is only a matter of time before UA gets it right and in the meantime all UA does is build the brand stronger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is the only thing that matters in the long run. If a sneaker is equally priced and aesthetically pleasing enough, the stronger brand will usually win out. UA does not have to dethrone Nike to be HUGELY successful in the sneaker industry. UA's current slice of the pie is so small that doubles and triples in market share are possible if management plays it right.
Dec 27 01:06 PMMr. Massive, great article, nice to see UA getting some attention on here. Good call on the $50 price target as well. I think UA is a buy at these levels, although I could see it going mid 40's if this market continues to behave the way it has been. I think your most recent comment is spot on, that if the bears win UA will drift significantly lower and inversely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], UA will explode back up to prior high levels if the bulls can take over again, but the same can be said for most high flying stocks as well so it all really comes down to what one feels the overall market/economy is going to do. I've been long UA and will look to get more so this week. My Sept.
