This is how it works, says 15-year-old Kayla Sulzberger. "We make our money in the first week of the school holidays. And in the second week, we spend it."

But she and the fourth of the quartet, Tetsja Van Lune, say that no self-respecting teenager would shop on their own: "It's boring," they moan, in unison. "You need a second opinion," declares Juanita. "The shop assistants don't really want to tell you what they think."
Chat to the gaggles of giggly schoolgirls crowding St Lukes - they seem to shop in gangs of four,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and many are from outside Auckland - and several other common themes emerge: shopping is fun. Company is mandatory. Much time can be profitably wasted in a warm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], busy mall. And sales rock.
There are a lot of those at St Lukes now as retailers start shifting winter items. Clothing, shoe and jewellery shops are these teens' favourite destinations, and Glassons gets more honourable mentions than any other.
For example, fluffy ugg boots may be highly fashionable, and they may go with both jeans and mini-skirts, and you may be able to buy a really hairy pink pair from Hannah's for $39.95 - but they are "disgusting".
Wide fabric belts slung across the hips are a great look, but at around $16 each,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cost too much,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says Kayla.
Chuck Taylor sneakers are hot, as well as "bling" - that's the shiny expensive stuff that festoons rap artists. Onehunga High 17-year-old Smeeta Keshoor, at the mall with three schoolmates, is already wearing her new bling - a pair of shiny, faux-diamond earrings.
There are no New Zealand figures to show whether retail sales change in the school holidays: the Retail Association's Russell Sinclair reckons the average teenager is more tyre-kicker than buyer.
But a recent Otago University study of 3000 teenagers aged 13 to 17 found the median amount spent by young people in a specified week was $35.
Which means saving for coveted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pricey items can be hard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says Genevieve Fleming,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 16,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a correspondence school student from Rakino Island, whose parents give her spending money in return for odd jobs.
The black Dickies zip-up jacket Genevieve proudly wears cost $165,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; it took her three weeks to scrape the money together.
"I spend a lot of money on junk food," she sighs, "so I had to resist the temptation."
Speaking of which, is the mall any good for boy-ogling? "Hot damn!" says Genevieve (which means "ohmigod, yes"). There's only one problem with that at St Luke's today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though, says Sarah Tang, 16: "All the boys here are with their mums."
