Boise State Broncos admit secondary NCAA violations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Boise State football coach Chris Petersen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], within the wake of the series of NCAA violations, will have fewer scholarships at hand in the following two years and fewer time about the practice field to prepare for tough season openers against Georgia this fall and Michigan State in 2012.
The sanctions already imposed on the Bronco football team are part of a broader penalty package put in place by university officials now for men's and women's tennis and track and field after an NCAA inquiry identified nearly two dozen violations by coaches in those sports.
The NCAA said its inquiry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along with an interior investigation by Boise State,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], identified 22 infractions as well as an lack of institutional controls essential to fully adhere to rules governing collegiate athletic programs.
University officials say the penalties for Boise State's high-profile football program and other sports are part of its overall response to the NCAA investigation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The NCAA can impose even tougher sanctions from the university after its Committee on Infractions meets the following month to examine the Boise State case.
But Boise State administrators are confident the self-imposed penalties, including a three-year probation period, and steps to boost its compliance office will satisfy college athletics' governing body.
"A lot of thought went into exactly what the appropriate sanctions should be for us," Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "We believe these sanctions are what's warranted and required to correct the mistakes."
The university's 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],500-page reaction to the NCAA details a series of "secondary" violations by football staff throughout a four-year period. During that time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coaches arranged for incoming players to obtain cheap transportation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meals and housing - in some cases simply a couch in a current player's apartment - during voluntary summer workouts. The report states 63 prospective players received those benefits, valued at less than $5,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000.
Bleymaier said new rules and policies have been put in place to assist the football staff avoid similar missteps in the future,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The university also issued a letter to Petersen and his staff detailing the guidelines and infractions committed between 2005 and 2008,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The report and penalties come as Boise State,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that has nothing you've seen prior been present in violation of NCAA rules, and its highly successful football program transition in the Western Athletic Conference up to the more competitive Mountain West Conference. Bleymaier, who had been attending MWC meetings in Phoenix now, said his new colleagues are sympathetic to the complexities of heeding the NCAA rule book.
"We're always worried about perception,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Bleymaier said. "That's why we would like it to be very clear exactly what the issues are and just how we've handled them."
The infractions were not restricted to the football team. Similar secondary violations were unearthed in the men's tennis program and the women's and men's track and field programs.
As a result,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the university is cutting scholarships and imposing recruiting restrictions for track and field,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and reducing practices and eliminating bonuses in 2011 and 2012 for that head men's tennis coach.
Probably the most serious violation is discovered within the women's tennis program included in the university's own internal investigation. The university's report says the head coach as well as an assistant violated rules by giving cash, lodging, entertainment and other benefits to a recruit and allowed her to take part in practices along with other NCAA events before she was officially enrolled.
The university also alleges former head coach Mark Tichenor and assistant Tiffany Coll gave false statements to investigators about their actions, claims that expose this program to NCAA ethics violations. Both coaches are no longer with the university.
Penalties for that women's tennis team include the lack of three scholarships for 2011 and in 2012, reduced practice time and a $5,000 fine. The Bronco women's tennis team will also vacate all wins and records for matches involving the ineligible player throughout the 2008-09 season.
