Street pastors hit Albert Road
Drinkers in need after boozy nights out can now get more help from street pastors in a pilot scheme,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The late-night volunteers can be found patrolling Albert Road in Southsea on alternate Friday and Saturday nights as part of a two-month trial.
The move comes after their success in the Guildhall Walk area, where volunteers with the inter-denominational church group have helped thousands of people since starting work three years ago.
The Street Pastors offer help, guidance and even hand out flip flops to help people who have lost shoes after they have been drinking.
And from the end of August they will also man the new,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], late-night Safe Space clinic to help people who drink too much on Friday and Saturday nights.
It is estimated that each person who attends a hospital emergency department costs 87, and the pastors scheme is aimed at cutting that bill by dealing with people at the scene.
Elly Mulvany, Street Pastors area co-ordinator, said: 'We trained another 18 volunteers this year with 8,000 funding from the Safer Portsmouth Partnership.
'Along with 15,000 funding from Portsmouth NHS, we have been able to sustain our work on the streets with bigger teams. We have been made very welcome by pub managers and door staff as well as the public who value our role of listening, caring and helping.'
