With many predicting the coldest winter in recent years Chief Medical Officer Dr Harry Burns today reminded people to wrap up warm and take sensible precautions to avoid slipping on icy ground,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Dr Burns also encouraged people to look out for their older relatives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], friends and neighbours this winter.

He said:
"As the weather gets colder it makes sense to remind ourselves of the simple steps we can take to stave off illness that can be caused by the cold weather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The elderly are particularly vulnerable at this time of year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. So if you are an older person use your winter fuel payment to make sure your home is well heated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It is also a good idea to have a supply of hot drinks to hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"When going outside make sure you dress for winter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with lots of layers to keep the heat in and protect you from the cold. To avoid slipping on icy pavements wear sturdy shoes with a good grip.
"If you live near an elderly friend or relative please take the time to check in on them and see if they are alright. You might also want to ask whether,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if they are 65 or over,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they have had their free flu vaccine. Flu can have serious consequences at this time of year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], possibly resulting in a stay in hospital. Taking the vaccine will offer much better protection.
