Put Vietnam on the list for bargains,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
HOI AN, Vietnam The pale lavender linen tunic, $7; the chocolate jersey pullover, another $7; the cream linen trousers, $16 all made to order were irresistible. At least for Jean-Marc Veritot de Boisrolin.
When the 25-year-old business school grad from St. Martin rolled into this historic seaside village,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he planned to stay just a day too little time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps, to take in the 300-year-old trading houses-turned-boutiques and cafes but all he was going to give it.
And then he saw the tailor shops. Dozens maybe a hundred of them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their entrances guarded by a mannequin army uniformed in flowered sundresses, pinstripe suits and cozy wool coats.
If that weren enough, there were the shoes sandals, loafers, cowboy boots, hiking shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nike-style sneakers swooshed in colors Crayola never dreamed of. And yes, all made to fit one personal tootsies.
Travelers may be drawn to Vietnam by the lure of the unknown and the long-forbidden. But once there, it a stone-cold shopper who can withstand the super cheap prices.
In Hanoi, it the last-season designer eyeglass frames ($10-$15), the slender crimson silk lampshades ($20, including the lamp), the fake designer watches that may tug at your wallet.
In Ho Chi Minh City call it Saigon, everyone else does it sophisticated, off-the-rack clothes that beg to jump in your suitcase.
Both cities also offer a smattering of tailors. But nothing beats Hoi An, where 36 hours and a couple hundred dollars can buy you an entire new wardrobe.
Emma Sweeting of London spent $260 on a long gown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], two sundresses, four tops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], three vests,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a pair of loose trousers and two pair of silk pants. Kim Marshall, a human resources consultant from Australia, spent $250 on nine garments shipped home at a cost of $52.
And yes, I confess, I forked over $266 for a silk cocktail dress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], raw silk suit, silk evening top,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seven linen tops, two pairs of linen trousers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a linen skirt, organza halter and four pairs of sandals. (Another $75 bought a beaded ball gown in Hanoi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], made-to-order overnight.)
But woe. All this cheap glamour doesn come without headaches.
Which tailoring shop to use? If you not with a group, you need to spend some time scouting. If you haven brought along your fave shirt or skirt to be copied, you will spend several hours poring over fashion magazines, picking out fabrics and getting measured. You will return a day later or so for your first fitting, and again some hours later for a second fitting. Once finished, you faced with the matter of shipping or carrying them along.
Or some garments simply may not flatter you quite the way you hoped,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Having clothes made to order requires absolute honesty about your body flaws.
Still, Marshall judged her shopping trip a success.
Shoes didn quite hit the mark, though. Straps on my sandals were tighter on one shoe than the other,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the loafers I ordered never did fit my own fault,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since I didn really know how thick to make the soles or how high to make the heel.
