Today, it takes a billion-dollar federal program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], replete with government bureaucracy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], regulations and red tape,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to get those school kids to class. You may not realize how complicated going to school the old-fashioned way has become, but you will after reading the state's 24-page handbook with helpful guidelines and strategies for more than 200 participating schools statewide.
There are politically correct options that take walking or biking to school a step further. The menu includes walking school buses, international walk/bike to school day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bicycle rodeos and trains. Rochester's 33-page Walking School Bus Manual also features creative names for walk-days (Marvelous Moving Mondays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc.) and an equipment checklist that includes walkie-talkies ($50-$350),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], large laminated walking route map ($25-$100) and pedometers ($15-$25).
Interesting articles today - contrast this with the Strib editorial calling for safety improvements on Hwy 101 in Eden Prairie and Chanhassen. While this program is observed to be an insidious growth of government by Mr. Steward,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it in fact targets the very safety risks that led to the death of a young girl riding her bike. Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], establishing transportation facilities that are safe for all users costs money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that doesn mean that this issue can be ignored.

This comment doesn speficially address the bussing issue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but another that is equally, if not more, in need of fixing. That is competitive athletics in high schools, colleges and universities. This has become an out-of-control entertainment activity that no longer belongs in an educational setting. It is time to look at the feasibility of moving this activity to a privately-funded club system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as in Europe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and putting schools back on mission to educate rather than entertain. Using a club system would allow more to compete and move the activities out of the school systems so funding can be focused on education. It is an even larger problem in colleges and universities where many so-called "student-athletes" are enrolled with a focus only on athletecs and little intention of attaining a meangiful education. In reality, these schools are acting as farm teams for the NBA and NFL Never mind the bloated bureaucracies (NCAA and MSHSL) they create and the dollars wasted on facilities and operations.
