Eureka flag banned at A
Melbourne Victory supporters have been banned from flying the Eureka flag at A-League matches because it is considered to be a political symbol under the league's regulations.
Descendants of the Eureka Stockade oppose the move but the Football Federation of Australia has forced Melbourne Victory to tell its supporters the flag is banned because it is a political symbol, Fairfax newspapers reported.
Victory supporters have displayed the standard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], first flown by rebel goldminers at the Eureka Stockade in Ballarat in 1854, since the club's inception.
"The Eureka flag was actually the first emblem of the first Victory supporters' group. We've had the Eureka flag at our games since day dot, and all of a sudden it's got political connotations and we can't fly it," said Blue and White Brigade supporters' group leader Adam Tennenini.
Mr Tennenini said security guards at Saturday's game against Sydney FC at Docklands told him anyone with a flag would be banned from the next home game on November 21, but supporters planned to defy the ban.
Victory chief executive Geoff Miles said the club backed supporters.
"We believe that the flying of Eureka flags really isn't adversely affecting, polarising or disenfranchising our supporters or opposition supporters," Mr Miles said.
The Eureka flag has been used by many political groups since the rebellion, but the flag was now listed as an object of state significance on the Victorian Heritage Register and was named an icon by the National Trust in 2006, Fairfax said.
Paul Murphy, founder of Eureka's Children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a group consisting of descendents of Eureka, said the flag was a symbol of unity.
"Whenever you see the flag,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether it's farmers in Mildura, soccer fans or on building sites, it simply means, 'I'm pissed off with whoever's in charge'," Mr Murphy said.
"It's an act of free expression and I would encourage those supporters to fly it as an act of defiance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the best wishes of the Eureka descendants."
Do you consider the Eureka flag to be a political symbol ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
Should all non-club flags be banned?
Have the FFA gone too far with this one?
Yosif Stalin um. whoops i mean Frank Lowry, with ur dictator powers of a sport governing body and with ur Henchmen. little Benito (Ben Buckley), little Tito (Rob Abernethy) and maybe theres a Castro in the mix somewhere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], i cant quite figure out who would have made this decision. as i look through the FFA Who's Who list there are many names there and i can't quite fathom any of them know of a certain flag in the united states known as the "Confederate Flag". it is still used around America as many things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], be it Political,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], racial,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], regional, it even appears on the state flags of Georgia, Alabama, and im sure a couple others of the deep southern states, my point is that the Eureka Flag is interpreted differently to many people. to me it represents the 'True Australia' to fight against injustice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to unite with eachother without regard to race,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], religion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sex etc. isnt that what Club fans are about???? Sounds like the FFA doesnt quite know what it is to be AUSTRALIAN, go take a hike!!
This is a blatant disgrace, Melb Victory (all fans for that matter) fans not allowed to fly the Eureka. Does this mean we cant fly the eureka flag at socceroo or ollyroo matches or even the matildas for that matter. Some people have a stronger bond or feeling with the eureka flag than our "National" half british flag. in my opinion the eureka flag should be our national flag, not the half british cousin. sounds like the FFA are taking on the tactics the Chinese used for Beijing 2008 Olympics, does anyone agree with that??? Do we have foreigners running the FFA???? is that why we cant fly another traditional australian flag??? message to the FFA- stop being a bunch of ***, if we want to fly different flags then why not? we cant dictate to you so dont dictate to us, at least make it democratic and put out a survey and ask the people that matter. "THE FANS" what our feelings on it are!!! What a farce!!!! makes me think what will become of the A-league with stupid bans and rules.
Why are they banning it in the first place? Because its political? Cmon. So its ok to wear Che Guavara tees and big red communist stars but its not ok to a)FLY a symbol of a historical and legendary Victorian and Aussie occurance, b) Fly a flag that has been used by the suppoters club since day one.
Is it the sponsors calling the shots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? What if I choose to fly a flag of Zion (the Lion one) at a roar game? is that TOO political? Adelaide supporters should use old communist soviet flags as they are known as reds. If the FFA want to cull off supporters they are going the right way about it.
Fight fire with fire people. Strike them where it hurts. At the turnstile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Football Federation Australia are making some crazy decisions these days. It's all a bit frightening for footy fans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I had my scarf checked at the gates, in case it had any *** words written on it. And yet a Sydney fan managed to get a flare through security.
So here's the message from the FFA, be good boys and girls, don't swear, be kind to the neighbours, put up with all the 'security' and sit quietly and watch the match, otherwise they're gonna do their best to turn you off the game.
